Department of Applied Chemistry

About the Department

Chemistry being a subject of basic science, bridges other natural sciences like physics, geology & biology, by which one learns to dissolve bodies & draw from them the different substances on their composition & how to unite them again and exalt them to a higher perfection. The developments in chemistry during the last few decades have been phenomenal because of rediscovery of importance of Chemistry in virtually all walks of life. The year 2011 was declared by the United Nations as the International Year of the Chemistry (IYC 2011). The theme of IYC 2011 was ”Chemistry – our life, our future”. It focused on the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well being of mankind. It aimed to raise awareness of chemistry among the general public and to attract young people into the field as well as to highlight the role of chemistry in solving global problems. This has increased demand of qualified and hardworking chemists in almost all industries like bulk chemicals, pharmaceutical, glass, oil and paints, minerals, cement, herbal cosmetics and many more. SBS holds the privilege of introducing Department of Applied Chemistry running two programs M. Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry (since 1997) and M.Sc. Chemistry (since 2012). Eighteen batches of M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry and two batches of M.Sc. Chemistry have passed out successfully from the institute. The Department of Applied Chemistry has been a centre for excellence due to its high placement record & inventory presence in the field of research and publications.

  • Students of M. Sc. Chemistry are trained in theory and fundamentals of chemistry so that they possess good theoretical background of various concepts such as organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical and bioanalysis etc.
  • Students of M. Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry learn basic analytical techniques, technical inputs of the instruments, their application and usage in the pharmaceutical industries for drug assays, leading to quality control of the drugs. Basic techniques involved in synthesis of drugs, purification and spectral analysis are also taught so that research and development in the field of medicines also becomes an area for their absorption in various R&D organisations and industries.

Faculty Base

The Department has a strong faculty base specialized in various fields of Pharmaceutical Chemistry & Chemistry from reputed Universities/Institutes like BHU, Rajasthan, Jammu, IIM, HNBGU, FRI etc. All faculty members are doctorate in specialised branches like Organic, Analytical, Inorganic, Physical & Pharmaceutical Chemistry with majority having NET/GATE qualification. The faculty is actively engaged in research & out come of this research is visible in the form of publications in International & National Journals of high impact factor. They are continuously enriching themselves professionally by attending workshops, symposia refresher courses and conferences at National and International levels. Faculty members & students have won the Young scientist awards at Uttarakhand Science Congress, and other conferences. The Faculty is also acting as resource person in various workshops & symposium.

Research Activities

The Department is actively involved in Research Activities such as :

  • Phytochemical and Pharmacological screening of various medicinal plants of Uttarakhand.
  • Isolation and Identification of active principle from medicinal plants.
  • Synthesis and evaluation of biological activities of various hetrocyclic compounds.
  • In-vitro Evaluation of dosage forms. Development of novel drug delivery system (Transdermal, Sustained release drug delivery and ionophoretic techniques).
  • Development of Polyherbal Formulations.
  • Development of newer analytical techniques.
  • Kinetic and Thermodynamic aspects of Enzyme substrate interaction.

The output of these research activities are being continuously communicated to various National and International journals. Research grants of several lakhs have been given by various prestigious organizations like Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Sciences and Technology, National Medicinal Plant Board, Department of Ayush, Ministry of Health, New Delhi Govt. of India, and UCOST. Besides students and faculty members have been awarded young scientist award in Uttarakhand Science Congress, and other International conferences for their research work. Ten students have been awarded Ph. D. degree and few students are enrolled for Ph. D. programme from different universities like HNBGU, Jodhpur National University, BIT Ranchi, UTU etc.,

Courses

M.Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Course Content

This course is designed well to train the students to work as professionals in Pharmaceut ical , Nutraceutical , Cosmoceutical, Chemical & Herbal Drug Industries . The comprehensive syllabus for this two year PG course include Chemistry of Natural Products, Basic Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Stereochemistry and Reaction mechanisms, Quantitative analytical methods, Drug design, Drug delivery systems, Bio-pharmaceutics, Chemotherapeutic agents, Pharmacodynamic gents, Applications of Computer and Biostatistics and Modern Analytical methods.

Apart from the above theoretical aspects, great emphasis is given on practicals so that students are well versed with various techniques / instruments used in various R&D units of Industry, advanced research & higher studies.

M.Sc. Chemistry

Course Content

Students are trained in theory and practical in fundamentals of chemistry so that they possess good theoretical & practical background of various concepts such as organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical and bioanalysis etc. The syllabus has four theory and two laboratory courses in each semester Course makes students to learn basic organic, inorganic, physical chemistry and basic analytical techniques in the first year with specializations in organic and analytical chemistry in second year . Basic techniques involved in synthesis of drugs, purification and spectral analysis are also taught so that research and development in the field of medicines also becomes area for their absorption in various R&D organizations and industries. Thorough knowledge of bio-organic molecules is also imparted to the students leading them to show their expertise in development of plant based drugs. Also a complete knowledge in the field of metal extraction and processing is covered so as to get them absorbed in metallurgical and mineral industries. Thorough knowledge is given in the field of spectroscopy so as to make students well aware with analytical techniques required for the industries and make their absorption as quality control /quality assurance chemist in various industries.

Scope

A Post Graduate in Pharmaceutical Chemistry/ chemistry can pursue his/her career in following areas:

  • Pharmaceutical chemists may be absorbed in industrial Research and Development (R&D) as Research Associate (RA), in Quality Control (QC) / Quality Assurance (QA), as an Analyst, as a Production Chemist in bulk drug Industry and can rise to the level of Asst. General Manager and Group Leader in R&D etc. & also may be absorbed in Pharma. marketing/ sales as a Territory Business Manager and can rise up to AGM, GM (Marketing).
  • Chemistry students get absorbed as scientists in various R & D organizations and in wide range of Industries like pharmaceutical, bulk chemicals, mineral industry, oil and Paints etc. as chemist.
  • After qualifying NET/GATE/ GRE/TOEFL/IELTS the students of both the disciplines can pursue his/her career in teaching or further obtain higher qualifications like M.Phil & PhD & can go abroad after qualifying for pursuing higher studies/jobs.
