About the department

The Department came into existence and functioning in the year 2001. Admissions will now be open to 14th batch of M.Sc. Biotechnology, 13th batch of M.Sc. Biochemistry and 10th Batch of B.Sc. Biotechnology with CBZ. The objective of the Department represent a departure from the scholastic oriented education to development of the students through integrated research, teaching and extension. The imperative is reflected in high profile of the faculty committed to take a holistic view of development ensuring inter-disciplinary research and synthesis of ideas emanating from different disciplines of science.

Faculty base

The Department has a strong faculty base with varied expertise and training in terms of their Doctoral and Post Doctoral work experience, in the field of Fermentation Technology & Bio process Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology & Tissue Culture, Cell & cancer biology & Animal Biotechnology, Microbiology & Immunology from the premier institutions of the country i.e. IIT-Roorkee, JNU-Delhi, FRI-Dehradun, IIT-BHU Varanasi, WII Dehradun, KGMC Lucknow, AMU Aligarh, Allahabad University, Allahabad, BHU Varanasi, DRDO New Delhi, Delhi University etc. The faculty base of the department is further enriched by faculty members having a post–doctoral experience from premier International Research Institutes as Karolinska Institute, Stockholm Sweden, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA and Charite, University of Medicine, Berlin. The faculty serve to produce knowledge / database, acquire capability to decipher and adapt knowledge produced else where and create an intelligent human power. The faculty keeps on enriching themselves by getting exposure at different workshops, conferences and refresher courses at institutions of repute in the country and abroad.

Course Contents

The Department grooms students by imparting in­depth knowledge (both theories & practicals) of various core courses and interdisciplinary courses like Organic Chemistry & Biomolecules, Bioenergetics & Intermediary Metabolism, Enzymology, Biochemical & Biophysical techniques, Plant Biochemistry, Cell Biology & Industrial Microbiology, Immunology & Advance Molecular Biology, Nutritional & Clinical Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Quality Control. Students are involved in research activities by assigning them research projects under the supervision of faculty members which run parallel throughout the final year academic session. Students are also encouraged for short time research training in R&D laboratories of premier institutes and industries of the country.


After passing M.Sc. & qualifying NET/GATE the candidates can either go for higher studies (Ph.D.) or seeking Junior Research Fellowship. If he/she qualifies GRE/TOEFL etc., the candidates can seek higher studies at any Institute abroad. After completion of Ph.D. in Biochemistry plenty of job opportunities are there in the various fields like production of antibiotics, vaccines, genetic engineering, combinatorial chemical products synthesis. Students may take up teaching as a Assistant Professor in a University / College.

The candidates may get a job of a Biochemist / Scientist either in Laboratories or Industries or Research Institute. The range is variable association with the medical practitioner. They can be appointed as a biochemist/sales/marketing executive in companies manufacturing culture media, diagnostic kits and various types of experimental kits used in genetic engineering. The candidates can get a job as biochemists in distilleries, wine making, beverage industries, petroleum exploration industries, metal extraction industries, water purification and waste treatment systems, as production executive in fermentation based / Pharmaceutical Industries / Dairy Industries / Food Industries / Quality Control Department of above industries.

Research Activities

The faculty is actively engaged in research activities in the field of Proteomics, Biodegradation of Xenobiotics, Bio-remediation, Protein Biochemistry, Enzymology, Immunobiology of Parasites, Molecular Immunology, Free Radical Biochemistry, Genetic Engineering and Clinical Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Industrial Biotechnology, Pharmacogenomics, Blood Biochemistry, Ageing and Heart diseases.

B.Sc. Biotechnology with CBZ

Course Contents

The curriculum involves the in-depth study of i.e. Zoology, Botany and Chemistry. The course is further enriched by the basic study of subjects like Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Genetic Engineering, Plant & Animal Biotechnology, Environmental & Industrial Biotechnology, Bio-diversity & Bioprospecting and various other advanced techniques. Further the student has to undergo a project/dissertation work for 12-15 weeks under the guidance of faculty members which helps to develop an aptitude for research.


The advantage of studying this degree course is that the candidate can further pursue higher studies (Master level) in specialized field of sciences i.e. Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Plant Molecular Biology, Medical Biotechnology etc. The candidates have an option for furtherance of their studies in any discipline for their Masters Degree in fundamental sciences. This program has been inculcated in the stream of education with a view of opening simultaneous avenues for students doing Graduation in Sciences to have an exposure of Biotechnology. The candidate passing this course can be appointed as sales/marketing executives in companies manufacturing, microbiological media / diagnostic kits or biotechnological products.

Their knowledge of fundamentals of Biotechnology will be an asset for their performance. The candidate can also go for Masters in Business Administration (MBA in Biotechnology). This will further strengthen their managing acumen in Biotechnology related industries. The candidate after passing this course can also opt for law (IPR & Biotechnology) which is a highly specialized profession and after the advent of IPR Laws in present global scenario this will be a most sought out job. The degree with an integrated approach with Biotechnology bias will be an added advantage for the candidate. The candidate after passing this course can also opt for Masters in Clinical Research which will open a new realm of Medical Sciences for the development of drugs for human use.

Research Activities

Biotechnology encompasses all the basic, applied and engineering sciences, so it becomes more realistic in our approach to give a proper orientation and research aptitude in the varied advance area of biotechnology in which the department is engaged. Presently the Department is having expertise in the field of Microbial bioprospecting, Fermentation Technology & Industrial Biotechnology, Molecular Diversity of Medicinal Plants, Plant Biotechnology and Tissue Culture, Cancer Biology in Animal Models, Animal Biotechnology, Genetics, Immunology & Biochemistry. The Department is equipped with all instrumentation facilities to carry out the research in above frontline areas of Biotechnology.


Students of Biotechnology are continuously exposed to the working cultures of the various laboratories / industries actively engaged in the frontier areas of biotechnological research. The Department maintains cent percent allotment of the students for formal 6-8 weeks summer training in top-notch laboratories / industries in the country which include IVRI -Izzat Nagar, Ranbaxy Research Ltd. Gurgaon, INMAS, NICD, NII, TERI, IGIB, ICGEB, Pannecea Biotech., AIIMS - New Delhi, CDRI, CIMAP, NBRI - Lucknow, CRI - Kasauli, Dabur Research Foundation -Gaziabad, CCMB, CDFD -Hyderabad, Bose Institute, Indian Center for Cultivation of Science, IICB -Kolkata, IGL -Kashipur.

After completion of M.Sc. Biotechnology students are getting good placement opportunities in Industries Research as well as teaching Institutes. Students are qualifying for CSIR- UGC, NET, GATE etc. Within the twelve batches of passed out students, 42 of them have qualified NET exams to pursue higher studies in the field of Biotechnology, others have got jobs in different industries and academic institutions of the region.
