About the department

The Department of Medical Microbiology was established in 2001 and over these 14 years the department has made incredible advancement in teaching and training of students in methodology of diagnosis and pathogenesis of diseases. The department is fully equipped with the modern equipments and teaching aids for the training of the students. The graduation course in Medical Microbiology imparts advanced training in diagnosis, pathogenesis and epidemiology of infectious diseases, immune mediated disorders and immunodiagnostics of malignant diseases. Students of the department also excelled in co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

The Department of MM & MLT organises visits of Hospitals and Clinical Laboratoris for the students to get awareness about the recent developments in the medical health care. Majority of the students from the department of MM/MLTwere selected for M.Sc. courses in various discipline within and outside the country, many of them. The department of Medical Lab Technology was started in 1995.

Since then the department has progressed remarkably. The attributable mortality to infectious diseases has lately increased many folds both in the developing and developed countries. Emergence of newer infectious diseases like HIV, SARS, bird flu etc and re-emergence of the old infectious diseases like tuberculosis, typhoid fever, syphilis and dengue fever with the enhanced virulence and resistance to treatment is the threat to the resource limited developing nations. This incredible creativity of the medical microbiologist emphasizes the contributions to health, diagnosis and management of disease. The ingenious innovations like use of the molecular tools and newer methods to cultivate the pathogens have revolutionized the diagnosis of infectious diseases. The automation in medical microbiology has effectively reduced the diagnostic time and management cost of the patient.

The Department has highly qualified and experienced faculty members having good standing in the field of Medical Microbiology & Medical Lab Technology. It is also steered by eminent Medical Microbiologists of International repute with postgraduate teaching experience, hospital diagnostic service and research experience in medical microbiology. The exceedingly dedicated faculty members have vast experience in hospital diagnostic services in the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, clinical immunology and nosocomial infections. Also supported by members of para-clinical, clinical and non-clinical staff.


B.Sc. Medical Microbiology

Course contents

The graduation course in medical microbiology provides a foundation to build expertise and knowledge in infectious and immune mediated diseases. This knowledge conveys the fundamental concepts of sound diagnostic judgment, search for newer antimicrobial agents, mechanism of drug resistance and research on newer vaccines. The course provides an extensive base for the advanced learning and quest for relevant research. The course in B.Sc. Medical Microbiology comprises of a comprehensive in depth study of the various aspects of infectious and immune mediated diseases

  • First year: Human anatomy & physiology, Basic pathology, Clinical biochemistry, Preventive medicine and health care, Fundamentals of medical microbiology, Instrumentation techniques in medical microbiology.
  • Second year: Bacterial pathogens & associated diseases, Systemic bacteriology, Misc microbes fungal pathogens & associated diseases, Laboratory diagnosis of microbial diseases, Human parasitology, Applied medical microbiology.
  • Third year: Pathogenic viruses and associated diseases, Applied immunology & serodiagnosis, Advanced diagnostic technology, Automation and computerization in medical microbiology, Molecular biology & clinical laboratory technology.

B.Sc. MLT Pathology

Course Contents
  • 1st year: Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Fundamental Microbiology, Instrumentation & Techniques in Microbiology, Basic Pathology, Preventive Medicine & Health Care and combined practical in various subjects.
  • 2nd year: Clinical Biochemistry-I (Instruments & Biostat), Clinical Biochemistry-II, (Enzymology), Medical Microbiology-I (Bacteriology), Medical Microbiology-II (Lab diagnosis and pathogenesis of various bacteria), Pathology and Allied Subjects -I (Hematology and Blood Banking), Pathology and Allied Subjects II (Staining procedures and Histology), Practicals in Biochemistry, Pathology and Allied Microbiology.
  • 3rd year: Clinical Biochemistry I (Instrumentation & Biostat), Clinical Biochemistry II (Enzymology: Principle procedure and clinical significance), Medical Microbiology I (Virology and Miscellaneous Microbes), Medical Microbiology II (Advanced Diagnostic Techniques of Microbiology), Pathology and Allied subjects I (Immunology & Blood Banking), Pathology and Allied Subjects II (Histopathology), Practical for Clinical Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology and Pathology.

The final exams are followed by a compulsory Internship of 6 Months.


A medical microbiologist is an indispensable member of the team managing the infectious diseases and forms an important part of the health care delivery system. The role of medical microbiologist in the clinical and basic medical research has always remained very crucial. The contribution of medical microbiologist in the pharmaceutical industry remains ever consummate. Medical microbiology is an obligatory part of the food industry and community health services.

After graduation, a medical microbiologist can be an important part of investigative team in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories and clinics. He can be a part of research team in research centers. The enthusiasm to run one’s own diagnostic practice can be another vast horizon. Those who look for an academic or research career may opt for pursuing higher studies like M.Sc. and PhD in medical microbiology and contribute in teaching and research.

With only a couple of branches in Medical Sciences which are as diversified as Medical Lab Technology in their clinical and practical applications; it is truly a job oriented course. The ever-expanding horizon of Laboratory Science creates immense job-opportunities. Due to the scarcity of trained Lab Technicians – the hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, pathology labs, research institutes etc. both in India as well as abroad are in search of these trained personnel on good perks. MLT graduates with academic mind-set and teaching-inclination can pick up teaching jobs in reputed medical & paramedical institutes. Blood Banks and Transfusion Services are other potential areas of intake of trained MLT professionals. Degree-holders who are willing to serve the rural population can work in Primary Health Service Centres and govt. funded dispensaries.

Professionals aspiring for higher studies may opt for Post Graduation in the field of Pathology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry. Research oriented areas in this field include Cell Biology, Molecular biology, DNA probes, Genetics, Neurobiology, PCR, Plasma research, Immunology to name but a few. "Telecommunication in Pathology" (Telepathology) -an indispensable part of the rapidly emerging concept of "Telemedicine Services" throughout the world -is another fascinating area, where technical skills of MLT personnel can be optimally utilized for assistance in the development of regional Health-Care facilities.

The new field of molecular diagnostic techniques permit identification & diagnosis of various diseases such as genetic, viral, bacterial, cancer therapy & DNA fingerprinting etc.

Research Activities

Since Research is an integral part of the fabric of Medical Laboratory Technology; through sustained efforts in research management, new technologies, procedures and diagnostic tests are developed and implemented to provide the highest level of care in patient diagnosis and management. Medical lab technology, thus, can be viewed as a bridging endeavor linking basic biological and physical sciences with medical principles.


Keeping in view the high standards of quality education in the field of MLT; many reputed pharmaceutical companies, diagnostic Labs and Clinical Labs have been holding regular In-campus Interviews through the especially constituted Placement Cell at SBSPGI, for the placement of these graduate during the final year. As result, many of ex-students have been highly placed with bigwigs in the field e.g. Ranbaxy Path. Lab, Dr. Lal's Laboratory and Thyrocare, Apollo, Escorts, AIIMS, Medanta & Gangaram. Many of our students have opened their own diagnostic centres.
