Department of Microbiology

About the department

The Department of Microbiology was established in 1996 and is the pioneer to start M.Sc. Microbiology in private sector. During the last 18 years of journey, more than 400 students have passed out and are serving in leading national and international organizations. Many of them have excelled in their professional endeavors and are placed in high positions in leading companies. Others have made their careers in academic line and are working as academicians and scientist in different universities and academic institutions all over the country and abroad. The department has well equipped laboratories with most of the sophisticated instruments and equipment of present needs of the students. The department has its tradition of giving more emphasis on practical training of the students in order to make them professionally more competent so that they may compete successfully at national and international level. The specialised facilities such as PCR, GLC, HPLC, Electrophoresis, Gel documentation system and fermenter system are available in the central laboratory of the institute for the use of students. The department also has a good collection of micro-organisms of industrial, agriculture, food and medical importance.

Faculty base

The Department has well qualified, experienced and talented faculty specializing in various fields of Microbiology including Fermentation Technology, Food and Dairy Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Biotechnology (Enzyme and antibiotic production), Soil and Agricultural Microbiology and Environmental Microbiology (Biodegradation and Bioremediation).

M.Sc. Microbiology

Course Contents

The following course curriculum is followed as specified by HNB Garhwal University Srinagar (UK), a central university. Different subjects taught to the students in four semesters are: General Microbiology, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Microbial Genetics, Microbial Physiology and Metabolism, Immunology, Biological Techniques, Recombinant DNA technology, Medical Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Food and Dairy Microbiology, Agricultural Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology and Research Methodology.

  • In order to develop an aptitude for research the students are required to work on a project on a selected problem under the supervision of a faculty member and to compile a research report in the form of dissertation in partial fulfillment of the award of M.Sc. degree in Microbiology.
  • During two years of M.Sc. programme, the students undergo rigorous training on all aspects of microbiological methods, research skills, interpretation and presentation of the research data. The emphasis is also given on the development of communication skills through seminars and discussions, so that students become well polished to face the challenges during their professional career. Opportunities are also provided to participate in programs such as Science day celebrations, Poster presentation, Scientific model building and educational tours to premier research institutions and industries.

Research activities

Food safety and security, emergence of globally significant diseases, threat of bioterrorism, and failure of formerly effective antibiotics and large scale contamination of dairy and food products has made research as an inseparable component of teaching science in general and microbiology in particular. The Department of Microbiology is actively engaged in the research and the major interests includescreening and probing of microbes for the production of value added products, screening of medicinal plants of Uttrakhand for their antibacterial and antifungal potential, rhizobacteria (PGPR), study of microbial diversity, food fermentations, bioremediation and molecular biology.

Since microbes and their actions pervade all aspects of our life, microbiologist have a crucial role to play, for example, in prevention of infections that may result from contamination of drugs, food and other industrial products by pathogenic microbes . They also have vital role in preparation of fermented microbial products and prevention of environmental pollution. All these areas have generated a vast job opportunities for one who is trained as a microbiologist. The microbiologists have job opportunities in following areas :

Microbiology is a core applied science in professional institutions, universities and research institutions. Therefore, after completion of M. Sc. Course one can pursue Ph D from any of these organizations. Alternatively, they may join as Research Assistants or Research Associates in different projects with a grant from some funding agencies such as UGC, ICMR, CSIR, DST, DBT etc. After completing their Ph.D, they may take up teaching or research as their career in different universities or research institutions. Globally, academic and research opportunities exist in areas like, Bacteriology, Virology, Immunology, Applied Microbiology, Microbial Biotechnology, Medical Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Veterinary and Agricultural Microbiology.

After completion of their course they can work as microbiologists in industries. The job opportunities are available in following areas – Industrial microbiology (antibiotic production, microbial products), Vaccines, Cosmetics and toiletries, Food and beverage production. Biotechnological products, Pharmaceutical industries, Oil industry and mining, Beverages; and as sales and technical representatives .

The health care industry provide numerous opportunities for microbiologists working in areas management, diagnostics and quality control.

With tremendous increase in research and development activities in science, publication in science, at present, is a lucrative endeavor. Many publishing houses have started recruiting microbiologists and microbial biotechnologists in their editorial staff. One can choose a career as a science writer or may take a job as editorial staff of a Journal.

The Institute organizes in campus interviews for the placement of successful candidates at the end of each academic session. Our students have succeeded in getting magnificent opportunities in Research & Development units of some of the reputed multinationals in the field of Food and Beverages, Dairy products, Pharmaceuticals etc. Our students have been successfully placed in various industries such as Nestle, Johnsons & Johnsons, Panacea Biotech, Riceland Biotech Ltd., Brindavan Beverages Ltd, Windlass Biotech, Revlon Ltd, Ranbaxy, Torex Pharmaceuticals, Ban Labs, SIDMAC, Jubilant Organosys, WIPRO (WISTA), Pepsi, Bisleri, Dabur, Parley foods, Clover Organic, Jubilant Life Sciences, Macleods Pharmaceuticals ltd., Cipla, Spicejet Board, Mankind and Institute of Genomics & Integrated Biology, New Delhi, Sanjay Gandhi PG Institute, Lucknow, IARI New Delhi etc.
