About the department

Established way back in 1996, the Institute is the first to offer Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.P.T.) program in the whole region. Currently the Institute runs Bachelor of Physiotherapy under the affiliation of HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar, Uttarakhand. Owing to the need of specialized education, the Masters Program (M.P.T.) in Physiotherapy was started in 2002 with specialization in Musculoskeletal, Neurology and Sports rehabilitation under the same university. The Department is now housed in a new block with overall covered area of 13,000 sq.ft. The 6 Out Patient Departments comprise an area of over 12,000 sq.ft. The Department has ergonomically designed lecture halls and hi tech labs. The goal is to produce skilled and efficient physiotherapists who have sound theoretical knowledge and have the ability to transfer the learned skills to clinical practice, for the upliftment of the profession and service to mankind. Physiotherapy is that branch of Medical Science which helps to restore, maintain and promote optimal physical health.

It not only helps to diagnose the extent & nature of neurological, musculoskeletal or sports related impairments, but also applies scientific management strategies to treat them. Physiotherapy is a health care profession concerned with the assessment, maintenance and restoration of physical functions and performance. The contribution of physiotherapy to India's Health Care System is linked nextricably to the changes that shaped our country from treating war amputees and earthquake victims to paralytic patients or those requiring post operative care. The innovative physical therapy of current times focuses on functional restoration of life style and has carved a niche for itself in patient care.

Faculty base

The Department is pillared by extremely dynamic post-graduate faculty members. They are engaged in conducting regular scheduled curricular classes involving theory, practical exposure, evidence based practice and research work. The faculty has a varied background of teaching and clinical experience from premier institutes, hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Actively involved in research, the faculty has published and presented several papers in journals and conferences respectively.


Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.P.T.)

Course Contents

The students undergo a vigorous academic program and in the 1st year, the subjects undertaken are Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Biochemistry, Basics of Physiotherapy & Social Psychology. In the 2nd year, the students are given practical as well as theoretical knowledge regarding Electrotherapy, Exercise Therapy, Biomechanics along with other subjects viz. Microbiology, Pathology & Pharmacology. The 3rd year gives the students full clinical orientation of Gen. Medicine, Gen. Surgery, Orthopaedics, Clinical Neurology & Psychiatry & Cardiothoracic conditions as well as knowledge of Disability Prevention & Rehabilitation.

In the 4th & final year, the students take over vigorous Physiotherapy training regarding management of Orthopaedic, Neurological, Cardiothoracic, Pediatric & Surgical Conditions. The Institute has its own 6 successfully running O.P.D's. Prior to starting of compulsory rotatory internship, the final year students are supposed to submit a Research oriented dissertation.

Master of Physiotherapy (M.P.T.)

Musculo-skeletal, Neurology and Sports Owing to the need of specialized education after Physical Therapy graduation, the Institute started up Post-Graduate programs in Physiotherapy with specializations in Musculoskeletal, Neurological Disorders and Sports Rehabilitation.

Course Contents

The first year of the Master's Program consists of theoretical classes focusing on Basic & Advanced Therapeutics as well as routine clinical postings for stipulated hours for the students. The second & final year include theory classes, clinical postings, seminars, hands on workshops, dissertations & research work as per respective specialization. The Master's students take up their final year University exam at the end of second year along with their dissertation submission. The weekly schedule also includes case presentations, clinical discussions and journal clubs to keep the students updated about the recent advancements in the field of physiotherapy.

Transcripts for Smooth Foreign Credentialing

The only Institute which has tailored crafted transcripts that also include those elective courses which facilitate credential evaluation for foreign countries. Perhaps, that is the reason that around 60% of the Institute's alumni are successfully placed in countries like US, Canada, England and Australia.

Workshops by International & National Speakers

On a routine basis the Institute organizes special workshops and seminars on recent advancements in the various fields of Physical Therapy, under which eminent International and National resource persons are invited to enlighten, both the UG & PG students from time to time. To name few of them are Mr. Timm Mann (Mulligan's Manual Therapy), Ms. Mary Brunet (McConnell Taping Techniques), Mr. Micheal Alexender Hutson (Myofascial Release), Mr. Micheal Laundrett (Advanced Taping Techniques), Dr. Ali Irani (Disaster Management), Dr. Ashish Kaushik (Manual Therapy Skills), Helen Millison (Core Stability), Joy Godrum (Chiropractrics). Other learned speakers who have enlightened the students in the last academic year are Dr. Piyush Jain (Kinesiology Taping), Dr. K Ganesan (Pilates and core stability), Dr. Sarvanan Sivanithi (Neuro Developmental Therapy), Dr Harpreet Singh (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular facilitation), Dr. Shabnam Agarwal (Therabands / Theratubes and Physioball exercises).

Guest Lectures

Lecture on chiropractic techniques by Dr. Jimmy Nanda, reknowned Canadian chiropractor and Founder and President of Indian Asso. of Chiropractic doctors.

Lecture on shoulder physiotherapy by Dr. Marg Perott and Dr. Tejinder Singh from Kilmore Physiotherapy Services, Melbourne, Australia

Clinical Exposure / OPDs

The Institute runs six specialized OPD's where the students are trained and exposed to clinical aspects of Physical Therapy under the supervision of experienced faculty. Pertaining to the area of specialization, the Institute successfully runs 6 fully functional OPDs. Be it patients of neurological disorders, musculoskeletal ailments or sports injuries, the written record of OPD exceeds over 300 patients per day and the students get ample opportunities to bank on their knowledge to be a better Clinical Therapist.

Deserving encomiums, the students of the Institute were deployed as Officer on Special Duty in the 18th Common Wealth Games held at New Delhi. The PG students also had the privilege of being deployed as On field Physiotherapist in the South Asian Winter Games (Ice Skating & Ice Hockey), South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship and at various State & National Level Cricket Tournaments.

Research Activities

Research by the students is a never ending process in the Institute's research labs. In a short span of five years, more than 300 papers have been presented by the various members of the department at various National and International Conferences. The students of Physiotherapy strive for excellence and have been bringing laurels for their acknowledged research work by winning at various conferences like the IAP Conference, Conference of Uttrakhand Council of Science & Technology, ANCPT Conference AIIMS, New Delhi, PHYSIOCON and Sports Medicine Conference organized by Indian Federation of Sports Medicine etc. The students have already completed successful dissertations on topics like MNCV, EMG, Isokinetic Dynamometer, Skin Sensory and Thermal Threshold Analyzer, Body Composition, Trigger Point Determination, LASER, Combo Electro Therapy Unit and Gait Analysis at various National level Institutes/Hospitals.


As a skilled Physiotherapist, the sky is the limit. One has a choice from a huge horizon of potentials to earn a respectful & wealthy living. Choices are many, it could be a platform to open up one’s own practice in the form of a clinic or Out Patient Department or be a part of medical team in hospitals in India or abroad. One could also attach with a national or state sports team or be a consultant for a fitness centre. Teaching assignments & research are other potential aspects which one could look into with the profession.


The passed out students of the Institute are either placed in best hospitals of India or have established their own clinical set ups. In SBSPGI, the placements start first from home itself. The Institute stands tall to absorb its very own passed out students as faculty members in the department. This unique placement drive differentiates SBSPGI from the rest. A major populace among them have also taken up teaching assignments in the reputed educational Institutes or are extending interdisciplinary physiotherapy services overseas including U.S.A, U.K., Canada, Australia & many other European countries. A strong asset of the institute is its dynamic placement cell which not only keeps the students updated about the upcoming job opportunities but also organizes campus and pool interviews. Regular personality developments workshops, Entrepreneurship Development Programs (EDP) and Workshops by national and international resource persons add to the overall learning curve of the students, helping them attain their goals in life and following their dreams of choice.
